![]() Problems arise when using a modified direct clutch solenoid to raise pressure to the direct clutch. Modified direct clutch solenoid after-market The transmission’s 4th gear is used in cold weather to increase engine RPM to help the engine and the transmission reach normal operating temperature in less time. The secondary shift sequence, when ambient temperature is below 5° F, is 1st-2nd-3rd-4th-6th. Code setting errors help with guided repairs.įor the 5R110W, the cold weather shift strategy normal is 1st-2nd-3rd-5th-6th. There is also a limp mode feature to let the driver know that it’s important to take the vehicle to a transmission shop. Pressure control solenoids that use 0 to 1 amps, variable by the transmission control module computer, controls 5 gears, shift points, shift quality, and reverse drive engagements. The shifts were smoother because they were controlled by seven linear solenoids, which were controlled by computer. ![]() Additionally, the 5R110W allowed for more control of gear selection with a switch or paddle shifter. The 5R110W was designed to foster better performance, fuel mileage, and enhanced control of shift quality and shift strategy. ![]() ![]() The Ford 5R110W TorqShift 5-speed automatic transmission was designed after the 4R100 4-speed automatic transmission. L et’s look at some of the most common 5R110W transmission problems. However, heavy-duty trucks that use the Ford 5R110W TorqShift 5-speed automatic transmission have experienced some pretty frustrating challenges. Mike Steen is the manager of Certified Transmission’s Technical Department.Truck drivers LOVE their trucks. The late filter design doesn’t trap particles quite as small as the inline design did. The later-design filter incorporates the same features as the early sump filter and inline filter, in that it passes a percentage of fluid through the finer-micron filter, but is all packed into one filter in the transmission pan. The new-design sump filter eliminated the need for the inline filter in the later vehicles. This change also required a change to the transmission-fluid pan ( Figure 5). In these applications there is no way to adequately flush the filter, as you can see in Figure 3, and the whole canister will have to be replaced.īeginning in the middle of the 2008 model year, Ford changed the sump-filter design in the 5R110W ( Figure 4). In some 20 vehicles this inline filter element cannot be removed separately from the canister, in which case the whole canister needs to be replaced at a cost of about $80 ( Figure 2). What we recommend is to bypass the inline filter element and canister to flush the cooler, or use a spare clean filter element during the flush and install a new filter element after the flush. It is important to understand that you cannot flush the cooler and cooler lines with the filter element removed the fluid would just bypass the cooler altogether. The transmission, of course, also has the 60-micron filter in the sump. About 10% of the fluid flowing to the transmission cooler passes through the inline filter element, which is a much-finer 5-micron element for better filtering over time.
